Public Affairs Representative – (oil/gas) California

Job Summary

Responsible for supporting local public affairs and local government relations programs in California. Job duties include development of positive relationships with local elected officials and key stakeholders, and development of external communications in alignment with Company’s narrative strategy, business objectives, and position on key issues.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local elected officials and key community stakeholders
  • Monitor local government proceedings, traditional and social media, and identify issues important to Company and the oil industry
  • Develop plans and strategy to manage issues that impact the industry
  • Support and implement public affairs strategies to advance Company’s goals, programs, and operations
  • Develop and manage social media plans and update periodically
  • Develop and manage social media calendar, including key messages and delivery platforms
  • Develop external materials including press releases, holding statements, educational materials, and distribute/publish as directed
  • Create and maintain company’s social media accounts
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for Company to engage with key community stakeholders
  • Represent Company at key community functions as needed
  • Coordinate local donations and community investments
  • Coordinate employee engagement and volunteer efforts
  • Coordinate site visits and host tours for local elected officials and other key stakeholders
  • Support emergency response efforts as needed
  • Collaborate with internal teams to effectively meet departmental goals
  • Complies with all Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies, practices and programs of the Company, and actively collaborates with the operational and EH&S teams to promote and provide a safe work environment
  • Perform administrative, technical, or other duties as assigned

Education, Certificates, Licenses

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in journalism, public relations, communications, political science or a closely related field
  • Valid Driver License


  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in public or government affairs, or a related field

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Experience managing communications across various social medial platforms
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of marketing and public relations
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, and complete multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently, or in a team environment as needed
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills


  • Familiarity with creating and publishing SharePoint sites
  • A working knowledge of the oil and gas industry
  • Spanish language skills

Work Environment

  • Primarily office work environment
  • Routine work involves common office activities during a typical 9-hour day such as standing, sitting, walking, typing, twisting as
  • May be required to occasionally lift, up to 25
  • May be required to occasionally work outdoors, including use of PPE
  • Requires periodic daytime, evening, or overnight travel in California
  • Must follow all company safety policies, including when visiting field
