Farm Operation Manager – Pistacios, Almonds

Local Agriculture client is seeking a strong Farm Operations Manager to oversee 4,000 acres of pistachios, almonds, alfalfa and row crops  – Kern Co.

Bilingual Spanish is required – must have 5-10 years experience in farm management experience.  College degree is preferred.

Farm Operation Manager, to oversee our operations in our Kern County, CA.  area. This position has significant autonomy and requires a broad skill-set, including general management capability, attention to detail, “get-it-done” attitude, superior interpersonal skills and in-depth agricultural experience.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: (Including but not limited to)
• Lead and manage crop production activities at farm locations within assigned territory
• Lead field operations, including tillage, planting, cultivation, harvest, and cover crop establishment
• Direct agronomic activities in coordination with VP of Farm Operations, including scheduling of irrigation, fertilizer applications, and chemical applications
• Manage location personnel and motivate seasonal, contract employees
• Ensure company policies and procedures are followed by employees
• Consistently communicate with management about farm activities, challenges and innovative solutions
• Manage P&L responsibility with significant focus on cost management, as well as managing site budgets
• Manage purchasing of supplies, equipment, and inputs
• Develop cropping plan to adhere to irrigation constraints and oversee all crop production and disposition
• Provide leadership for management of irrigation systems and monitoring of water usage

Requirements: (Including but not limited to)
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 3 – 5 years of experience managing agricultural programs over a large geographic region
• Self-directed individual who leads projects to identify and implement solutions with team input
• Demonstrated strategic management of irrigated crops
• Work closely with the Farm Accounting Manager regarding budgets, income projections, construction projects, industry trends, monthly reporting, contracts
• Provide feedback to MGMT on its current processes regarding custom farming, from tracking employees hours, current rates charged to implementation on new farming practices and new venues for opportunity
• Demonstrated financial management experience and budgeting skills
• Adaptability to changing situations and have the ability to perform multiple tasks with multiple priorities
• Demonstrated strong work-ethic, outstanding leadership ability and exceptional interpersonal skills
• Proficient in the use of Windows based computer programs (Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and a general aptitude with software systems
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to train and work with operational personnel on the farm
• Superior organizational and project management skills and experience working with employees
• Ability to acquire and hold a valid US driver’s license and successfully pass vehicle insurance verification
• Candidates must be eligible to work unrestricted in the U.S. without company sponsorship
• Ability to comprehend, read, write and communicate proficiently in English and interact with all levels of the organization.

Preferred Position Qualifications
• Bachelors of Science degree in an Agriculture related program
• 5 – 10 years of experience managing agricultural programs over a large geographic region
• Bilingual in English/Spanish is required

Base salary – $100,000-160,000 DOE
